Door Chain vs Distraction Burglar | How a Bar Limiter Buys You the Seconds That Matter

A door chain fitted into the stud, not the lining, can defeat a distraction burglar's whole game plan. Here's what to fit and how to do it right.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary put out a witness appeal earlier this month after a couple in their eighties in Aldershot were conned on their own doorstep. A man knocked, claimed there was a water leak, talked his way close enough, and left with cash and jewellery. It's a horrible crime, and the constabulary are appealing for witnesses.

Distraction burglars are social engineers. The story gets you to the door. The real work happens the moment you open it. And that's where most security advice stops. "Good locks won't save you from this one" is true as far as it goes, but it's only half the picture, and leaving it there isn't fair to the people it's meant to help.

The right door hardware doesn't stop you opening the door. It stops you opening it all the way. That distinction is everything.

Why the Con Only Works When the Door Swings Fully Open

They need proximity. They need to step inside, or get close enough to distract you while a partner slips past. A plausible story gets you to answer. But the story only pays off if you open that door fully.

Change that one step and the ruse falls apart.

You hear a knock. You open the door on the chain. They're held at a four-inch gap. You can see them, speak to them, and ask them to wait while you phone the water company direct. That pause, those thirty seconds while you make the call, is fatal to the con. Genuine callers wait. Bogus ones don't.

What to Actually Fit, and How to Fit It Properly

A steel-bar door limiter, not a decorative brass chain.

This is the most important item on the list and also the cheapest. You'll find bar limiters in most hardware shops for £15 to £25. What you're looking for on the packaging: compliance with BS EN 1906, and a stainless or hardened-steel bar, not a pressed-tin bracket.

Fitting matters more than most people realise. The screws must go into the structural stud behind the door frame, not just the softwood lining that the frame sits in. The lining is typically 20 to 25mm thick and will rip out under any pressure at all. A locksmith fitting one of these properly will drill through the lining and drive 75mm or 100mm screws into the stud behind it. That's the job. Done correctly it takes about twenty minutes.

Cost for a supply-and-fit by a locksmith in Basingstoke or the surrounding villages is roughly £55 to £85 all in, covering parts and the call-out. If you're already having other work done, the fitting is often closer to £25 to £35 as a bolt-on. Either way, ask upfront what the call-out element is versus the labour, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

A video doorbell as a second layer.

Not the recording that matters here, though that's useful for appeals like the Aldershot one. What matters is the screen. Being able to see and speak to someone at your door without opening it at all shifts the power balance entirely. You're in control. They're on camera. Entry-level wired Ring models are currently around £50; battery models with better night vision sit closer to £80 to £99. If you're renting out a property in Chineham or Hatch Warren, fitting one as standard is a sensible call. It deters, it records, and it gives a nervous tenant another option before they open the door.

A visible verification habit.

A small sign at eye height by the door: 'We always call your company directly before opening.' Sounds almost too simple. It works because bogus callers want soft targets. A household that has clearly thought about this is more effort than they need.

My Honest Opinion on the Hardware Hierarchy

A properly fitted bar limiter offers more real-world protection against distraction burglary than a smart lock, a subscription alarm, or any app notification. Technology earns its place when it supports a physical barrier. On its own, it's a comfort rather than a defence.

If you want to match what serious security specifiers look for on a door set, check that any cylinder on your front door carries a TS007 3-star rating or SS312 Diamond accreditation, and that the lock body itself is BS3621 or BS8621 compliant. That won't stop you being conned into opening the door, but it stops a second person working the lock from outside while you're distracted at the threshold.

A bar limiter and those cylinder standards together is a genuinely strong combination for a modest outlay.

A Word for Basingstoke Residents Looking Out for Neighbours

Distraction burglars target older people. They target people who answer doors quickly, who are trusting, who feel rude not helping someone with a problem. If you've got elderly neighbours in Popley, Winklebury, Old Basing, or out towards Sherfield-on-Loddon or Sherborne St John, five minutes checking whether they've got a working door bar and a habit of calling back to verify is worth considerably more than a leaflet through the letterbox.

If they're renting, the landlord has a real interest in this too. A door bar costs very little. A distraction burglary, and the trauma that comes with it, costs a great deal more. That community piece is what makes the difference in practice, not just the hardware on the door.

If you'd like a door bar fitted properly, or want a second opinion on whether your existing chain is actually screwed into the stud, Rapid Response covers Basingstoke and the surrounding RG21 to RG29 postcodes. Average arrival is under thirty minutes where we can manage it, and we'll give you the full price before we set off. We're not going anywhere, and neither is the offer.

Questions people actually ask

A chain flexes and can be forced or cut faster under pressure. A steel bar limiter is rigid, which means forcing it requires enough noise and effort to give you time to react or call out. For distraction burglary specifically, get the bar limiter. Look for one compliant with BS EN 1906, with a hardened steel bar and proper steel fixings included. Brands like ERA and Defender both make decent ones in the £15 to £25 range. The chain is better than nothing; the bar is better than the chain.
