uPVC Door Repair vs Replace Cost | The Ten-Year Maths Explained
Full cost breakdown: repairing a uPVC door gearbox and cylinder twice a decade vs full replacement. Real prices, real scenarios, no fluff.
A full uPVC door replacement in Basingstoke will cost you somewhere between £800 and £1,800 fitted, depending on the frame, the glass spec, and whoever you get in from the RG21 trading estate to do it. A gearbox and cylinder service, done twice over ten years, will cost you around £250 to £380 total. That gap is the whole argument.
Most homeowners replace a door when the lock gets stiff or the handle droops. That's the wrong call nine times out of ten. The door is fine. The multipoint gearbox is tired, the cylinder is worn, and the hinges need a shim. Forty minutes of work, not a forklift and a week's wages.
What Actually Goes Wrong on a uPVC Door
These doors have three moving systems: the multipoint locking gearbox running up the edge of the door, the euro cylinder in the centre, and the hinges. All three wear out at different rates. All three are serviceable or replaceable without touching the frame.
The gearbox, usually a GU, Fuhr, Maco, or Winkhaus unit, takes the most punishment. Every time you lift the handle and turn the key, you're cycling a series of hooks, rollers, and deadbolts through a steel keep. After eight to twelve years, the springs weaken, the hooks don't quite engage, and the door starts to feel like it's fighting you. That's not a new-door problem. That's a £95 to £160 gearbox.
The cylinder wears separately. If the key's getting stiff, or you've moved into a rental in Chineham or a house in Hatch Warren and you're not sure who else has keys, you want a new TS007 3-star cylinder anyway. Ultion or Avocet ABS are the ones I fit most. Budget £40 to £75 for the part, another £40 for labour.
Hinges sag over time. A door that drags at the bottom and gaps at the top isn't broken, it needs the hinge screws tightened and possibly a new friction hinge. Half an hour's work.
The Ten-Year Cost Comparison
| Scenario | Year 1 | Year 5 | Year 10 | Ten-Year Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full door replacement (mid-spec) | £1,200 | £0 | £0 | £1,200 |
| Full door replacement (premium) | £1,700 | £0 | £0 | £1,700 |
| Gearbox + cylinder service (twice) | £0 | £190 | £190 | £380 |
| Gearbox only, once | £0 | £145 | £0 | £145 |
| Cylinder upgrade to TS007 3-star | £85 | £0 | £85 | £170 |
| Repair route total (realistic) | £85 | £145 | £85 | £315 |
The repair route isn't just cheaper. It keeps pace with security standards better, because you're fitting a current-spec cylinder at each interval rather than living with whatever came on a 2015 door.
When Replacement Actually Makes Sense
I'll tell you when to replace, because sometimes you should.
- The frame is warped or delaminating. You can see daylight around the seal, and no amount of adjustment closes the gap. A frame failure means the thermal and weather performance is gone, and no gearbox swap fixes that.
- The glass is broken or blown (misted between the panes). The glazing unit needs replacing regardless, and if the frame's also fifteen years old, the maths shift.
- The door's been forced and the frame is buckled. A burglary on a property in Popley or Winklebury that's left the keep torn out of the frame sometimes means the timber behind the uPVC is split. At that point, repair is a patch, not a fix.
- You're selling. A new door lifts kerb appeal in a way a serviced old one doesn't, and the cost can be absorbed in the sale price.
Outside those four situations, repair is the right call.
What Drives the Repair Cost Up
Gearboxes aren't universal. A Fuhr 856 is not interchangeable with a GU Securefast without some adaptation. Getting the right replacement part for a door fitted by a joiner in Overton fifteen years ago can mean a bit of detective work, and sometimes a bespoke-length gearbox adds £20 to £40 to the part cost. Not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing.
Cylinder length matters too. Measure yours before buying: you want the internal and external measurements correct, or the cam won't sit flush and the security rating's compromised. A professional will measure and source it. If you're doing it yourself, get it wrong and you've bought a paperweight.
Emergency call-out rates also apply if the door won't open at all. A planned service in working hours is always cheaper than a Sunday evening in Kempshott when the gearbox finally gives up.
Spend the Money Sensibly
If the door is older than eight years and getting stiff, book a service before it becomes a lockout. A gearbox, a TS007 3-star cylinder, and a hinge check now will cost you £180 to £250 and buy you another five to eight years. That's the sensible spend. Replace the door only when the frame or glass forces your hand.
